Rebuilding a neighborhood fabric in an older urban area / Completion 1992
Home for 57 first time homebuyers, Northside Terrace is a success story in the Williamsburg area that has experienced a remarkable rebirth and rejuvenation. It was developed in a private / community partnership with the New York City Housing Partnership for a blighted city block condemned by the city twenty -six years earlier for an manufacturing expansion that never occurred. BSA zoning variances were required for the first new building along Bedford Avenue that since completion have helped transform the neighborhoods around it. The design has been recognized by a 2000 Housing Citation for Design Excellence by the Boston Society of Architects and AIA New York Chapter. The jury wrote
"Building affordable housing in dense urban environments remains a daunting challenge on every level...it is good plans and appropriate responses to community needs, combined with strong community participation on the entire process that characterize successful affordable housing projects"
