Reuse of a school building for affordable housing / Completion 1993
Cleveland Arms Apartments is home for 39 units of affordable housing, and is another example of our firm's experience with revitalizing architecturally worthy but neglected buildings for new uses.
The design enhances the quality of the original three-story 1915 school structure and 1950 gym annex by using the existing massing, circulation, and structural systems for low keyed additions that double the usable floor area and provide ample parking. Two floors were added to the rear of the school, and the gym annex was reconstructed to add a second floor. There is a variety of apartment spaces, from high ceilings in the Main Building to duplex units in the addition. The complex is well maintained by the owners, and has brought a sense of renewal to an older Carteret neighborhood
